One of the joys of Unpsychology – perhaps the most important one – is the opportunity it offers to encounter the many fascinating people who are involved as contributors. This tenth issue for example brought me into contact with the lovely Riki Moss, over in Vermont, whose story “Potluck at the death cafe” made me laugh out loud for its wit and wisdom. It reaquainted me with Wendy Robertson Fyfe, not far from me in Scotland, whose beautiful “Tending the dead in ceremony” prompted me to contemplate my relationship with death. And it gave me a new comrade, Dr Weston Robins, whose “Edge exploration” introduced me to his revolutionary work with young people and families in Georgia.
Wes in particular struck a cord, with his reflections upon the mental health system. When he writes, “We must break down the walls that tell us we are broken, sick, damaged and ill” I wholeheartedly concur, as this echoes my own work in the mad movement.
This prompted me to invite Wes to participate in a written dialogue, which can be found following his piece in the magazine, and which we continued here on Unpsychology Voices. But even this wasn't enough for me – I wanted to connect in person with Wes, to dig into our common interests and concerns – and thus we met on zoom a couple weeks ago to have a chat.
Here (at the top of this post) is the recording of our conversation, polished off beautifully by Unpsychology sound editor,
